After breakfast at your hotel, begin a 3-hour drive to Londorossi Gate on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro, passing through charming villages and farmland on the mountain’s lower slopes. At the gate, your dedicated porter team organizes and weighs equipment while park rangers’ complete registration formalities. At Londorossi Gate, you’re entered into Kilimanjaro National Park’s official records before beginning your three-hour hike up to Mti Mkubwa Camp, also known as Big Tree Camp. The trail winds through magnificent montane rainforest filled with exotic moss-draped trees, vibrant flowers, and endemic bird species. Watch for Black and White Colobus monkeys swinging through the canopy, as well as signs of elephants that occasionally travel through this area. The path gradually ascends through lush vegetation creating a mystical atmosphere. Upon arrival at camp, your spacious tent will already be pitched by your professional crew, with hot washing water ready and your skilled chef preparing a delicious dinner.
What You’ll Experience: The excitement of beginning your Kilimanjaro adventure, rich biodiversity, possible afternoon showers (rain gear essential), comfortable high-quality camping, and the first night sleeping under African stars. The relatively short first day allows gentle acclimatization.
Overnight: Mti Mkubwa Camp in premium 4-season mountain tents
Meals Included: Full board with chef-prepared meals (breakfast at hotel, gourmet picnic lunch on trail, three-course dinner at camp)
Starting Elevation: 2,780m (9,120 ft)
Ending Elevation: 3,505m (11,500 ft)
Distance: 8km (5 miles)
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
Habitat: Heather and Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
After an early breakfast, climb out of the rainforest and into the heather and moorland zone, crossing many streams en route to Shira 1 Camp. The trail leads through a savannah of tall grasses, heather, and volcanic rock draped with lichen beards as you ascend through lush rolling hills. The vegetation transforms dramatically as you gain altitude, transitioning from dense forest to open moorland. You’ll cross several crystal-clear mountain streams and traverse the unique high-altitude landscape. After crossing several streams, you reach the Shira Ridge before dropping gently down to Shira 1 Camp where the view of Kibo across the plateau is truly amazing. The Shira Plateau opens up before you in all its glory, one of the highest plateaus on Earth. Your camp sits in a spectacular location with unobstructed views of Kibo Peak. This is when the true majesty of Kilimanjaro becomes apparent.
What You’ll Experience: Dramatic ecosystem changes, increasingly spectacular mountain vistas, thinner air requiring slower pacing (“pole pole”), your first views of the glaciated summit, and the satisfaction of steady altitude gain. Hydration is crucial, your guides will ensure you drink 3-4 liters of water daily.
Overnight: Shira 1 Camp in premium mountain tents
Meals Included: Full board with hot meals and snacks
Starting Elevation: 3,505m (11,500 ft)
Ending Elevation: 3,850m (12,630 ft)
Distance: 7km (4.3 miles)
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Today’s trek across the Shira Plateau is one of the most scenic parts of the entire journey as you hike across moorland meadows to the lunch point. This is a gentle walk east toward Kibo’s glaciered peak, across the plateau which leads to Shira 2 Camp on moorland meadows by a stream. On clear days, Shira 2 Camp offers perfect views of Mount Meru, the fifth highest peak in Africa. The relatively short hiking day is intentional, allowing excellent acclimatization. After lunch, you’ll take an acclimatization walk toward Lava Tower Camp with an elevation gain of 200 meters before returning to Shira 2, which increases summit success chances and reduces altitude sickness risk. The afternoon acclimatization hike is crucial, climbing higher then sleeping lower helps your body adapt to altitude. The landscape here is otherworldly, with unique high-altitude flora including giant lobelias and groundsels found nowhere else on Earth.
What You’ll Experience: Some of Kilimanjaro’s most spectacular scenery, the important “climb high, sleep low” acclimatization principle in action, possible sightings of unique Dendrosenecio kilimanjari plants (giant groundsels endemic to this mountain), and growing excitement as the summit route becomes clearer.
Overnight: Shira 2 Camp in premium mountain tents
Meals Included: Full board with afternoon tea and snacks
Starting Elevation: 3,850m (12,630 ft)
Ending Elevation: 4,200m (13,780 ft)
Distance: 14km (8.7 miles) via scenic northern route
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Habitat: Alpine Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Today you continue to Moir Hut, a little-used site at the base of Lent Hills offering excellent acclimatization opportunities through various walking options on Lent Hills. This is one of the Lemosho Route’s unique advantages, taking a northerly route to Moir Hut rather than heading directly east. After lunch, if you have the energy, a late afternoon hike in the surrounding Lent Hills provides excellent acclimatization. The trail today is longer but maintains a gentle gradient, allowing steady altitude gain without excessive strain. You’ll traverse fascinating volcanic landscape with striking rock formations and expansive views. Moir Hut is one of the most remote camps on the mountain, seeing very few trekkers, which creates a sense of solitude and wilderness. The camp sits beneath dramatic cliffs with incredible vistas across the northern slopes—perspectives of Kilimanjaro that few climbers ever see.
What You’ll Experience: Remote wilderness atmosphere, fewer crowds than other routes, optional acclimatization hikes that significantly boost summit success, spectacular northern perspectives of Kilimanjaro, and the satisfaction of being on one of the mountain’s most exclusive routes.
Overnight: Moir Hut in premium mountain tents
Meals Included: Full board with warm soup and hot beverages throughout the day
Starting Elevation: 4,200m (13,780 ft)
High Point: 4,630m (15,190 ft) at Lava Tower
Ending Elevation: 3,950m (12,960 ft)
Distance: 7km (4.3 miles)
Hiking Time: 4-6 hours
Habitat: Semi-Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
From the Shira Plateau, continue east up a ridge toward Kibo Peak, with your direction changing to southeast toward Lava Tower, dramatically nicknamed the “Shark’s Tooth”. After about five hours of hiking, reach the impressive rock formation called Lava Tower at 4,630m, a towering 300-foot volcanic plug that dominates the landscape. This is another crucial “walk high, sleep low” acclimatization day. Lunch is served at Lava Tower, where many trekkers feel altitude effects (headache, breathlessness) this is intentional and beneficial. After lunch, descend for approximately two to three hours to Barranco Camp, passing through the strange yet beautiful “Garden of the Senecios” featuring giant groundsel plants and otherworldly lobelias. Barranco Valley is one of the prettiest areas on the entire trail. Although you end nearly at the same elevation you started, having climbed to 4,630m significantly improves your body’s altitude adaptation, critical preparation for summit night.
What You’ll Experience: The highest elevation yet, possible altitude symptoms (completely normal), lunar-like alpine desert landscape, the impressive Lava Tower landmark, dramatic descent into lush Barranco Valley, giant exotic plants, and the scientific brilliance of acclimatization strategy in action.
Overnight: Barranco Camp in premium mountain tents
Meals Included: Full board with hot lunch at Lava Tower
Starting Elevation: 3,950m (12,960 ft)
Ending Elevation: 4,040m (13,250 ft)
Distance: 5km (3.1 miles)
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
The day begins with the famous challenge climbers anticipate: the Barranco Wall. This 257-meter rock face looks intimidating but isn’t as difficult as it appears, it’s more of a steep scramble requiring occasional use of hands for balance. While challenging, it’s not technical climbing, and your guides will assist as needed. The views from atop the wall are absolutely spectacular, with the Southern Ice Fields and summit visible above. The sense of accomplishment is immense! After conquering the wall, the trail winds through a series of ridges and valleys across the mountain’s southern face. You’ll traverse undulating terrain with constant stunning views. Karanga Camp is strategically positioned on a rocky promontory with panoramic vistas. This shorter day serves multiple purposes: allowing recovery from the Barranco Wall, providing additional acclimatization time, and ensuring you’re well-rested for the summit push ahead.
What You’ll Experience: The thrill and pride of conquering the Barranco Wall, incredible photo opportunities at every turn, perhaps the clearest views yet of your summit route, a more intimate smaller camp, and building anticipation as summit night approaches. Many climbers say this is their favorite day on the mountain.
Overnight: Karanga Camp in premium mountain tents
Meals Included: Full board with extra snacks and hot drinks
Starting Elevation: 4,040m (13,250 ft)
Ending Elevation: 4,673m (15,331 ft)
Distance: 4km (2.5 miles)
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Early Dinner
Today you complete the Southern Circuit, ascending to rocky Barafu Hut which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Barafu means “ice” in Swahili, aptly named for its exposed, windswept location in the barren alpine desert. The trail climbs steadily through increasingly sparse landscape, vegetation has completely disappeared at this elevation. You’ll arrive at camp by early afternoon, giving you crucial rest time. Hot drinks and an early dinner are served around 5-6 PM. Your experienced guides will conduct a detailed briefing about the summit attempt, check your equipment, ensure you have all necessary warm layers prepared, and provide final instructions. After dinner, rest and try to sleep for a few hours despite the excitement and altitude. You’ll be woken around 11 PM for hot tea, biscuits, and final preparations before departing for the summit around midnight. Pack your summit daypack carefully with water, high-energy snacks, headlamp with spare batteries, camera, and all warm layers including insulated jacket, hat, and gloves.
What You’ll Experience: Thin air and noticeably reduced oxygen, slower pace and labored breathing, spectacular sunset views over the clouds, growing nervous energy and anticipation, the challenge of resting before summit night, and the surreal feeling of being so close to Africa’s highest point.
Overnight: Barafu Camp in premium mountain tents
Meals Included: Full board with early dinner (around 5:00 PM) and midnight snack before summit departure
Starting Elevation: 4,673m (15,331 ft)
Summit Elevation: 5,895m (19,341 ft)
Ending Elevation: 3,068m (10,065 ft)
Ascent Distance: 5km
Descent Distance: 12km
Hiking Time: 7-8 hours ascent / 4-6 hours descent
Total Time: 11-15 hours
Habitat: Arctic Zone to Rainforest
Meals: Summit snacks, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Around midnight, begin the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek, ascending in darkness for several hours while taking frequent short breaks. The route heads northwest through heavy scree and loose volcanic rock via endless switchbacks toward Stella Point on the crater rim. The cold can be extreme with temperatures dropping to -20°C, and winds may be fierce. Progress is deliberately slow and methodical, this is where “pole pole” (slowly slowly) matters most. Your headlamp creates a small bubble of light as you focus simply on the steps ahead, following your guide’s steady, unhurried pace. Each breath becomes more labored, each step more deliberate. After approximately 6-7 hours of climbing, you’ll reach Stella Point at 5,685m on the crater rim where you’ll witness one of the most magnificent sunrises imaginable over Mawenzi Peak. Ascending via Stella Point affords a relatively short final section to Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa! From Stella Point, continue for about one hour along the crater rim, sometimes through snow, to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the entire African continent at 5,895m! The glaciers glisten in the dawn light. Take photos, celebrate this extraordinary achievement with your team, savor the moment. You’re standing on top of Africa! After summit celebrations, begin the long descent.
Descend back to Barafu Camp for a brief rest, brunch, and congratulations from the camp crew, then continue descending to Mweka Camp at 3,068m in the upper rainforest. The descent can be grueling on knees and legs, trekking poles are essential. The trail is very rocky and can be quite hard on the knees. Despite bone-deep exhaustion, you’ll feel euphoric having accomplished this remarkable feat. The oxygen-rich air and moisture at Mweka is wonderfully refreshing.
What You’ll Experience: The hardest physical and mental challenge of your life, extreme cold and possible fierce winds, significant altitude effects, potential nausea, overwhelming joy and emotion at reaching the summit, one of the world’s most spectacular sunrises, complete exhaustion on descent, sore muscles, and profound satisfaction and pride that will last a lifetime.
Overnight: Mweka Camp in premium mountain tents
Meals Included: Energy snacks and hot drinks during climb, full board after return to camp with celebration dinner
Starting Elevation: 3,068m (10,065 ft)
Ending Elevation: 1,640m (5,380 ft)
Distance: 10km (6.2 miles)
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
After breakfast, complete the final descent through the lush rainforest slopes to Mweka Gate where you’ll sign out of Kilimanjaro National Park and receive your official summit certificate, a treasured memento proving you conquered Africa’s highest peak! At lower elevations it can be wet and muddy, gaiters help. Celebrate with your incredible mountain crew who made your summit possible. This is when you’ll tip your guides, assistant guides, and porters according to established guidelines (your guide will advise appropriate amounts). Say emotional goodbyes to the team who became like family. Your private vehicle transfers you to your luxury lodge (approximately 1.5-2 hour drive). Upon arrival, you’ll be warmly welcomed with refreshing drinks and cool towels. Check into your spacious suite or cottage, enjoy a long hot shower (pure bliss after 8 days on the mountain!), and relax by the pool. Professional laundry service will clean your trekking clothes. Enjoy a massage at the spa (additional cost), savor gourmet cuisine for dinner, and sleep in a real bed, heaven! This recovery day is essential before beginning your luxury safari.
What You’ll Experience: Stiff, tired legs and sore muscles, muddy rainforest trails, the bittersweet emotion of completing your trek, heartfelt goodbyes to your mountain crew, and the absolute luxury of hot water, soft beds, and fine dining. The transition from mountain to luxury feels almost surreal.
Overnight: Premium lodge with spa facilities (Gibbs Farm, Ngorongoro Farmhouse, or similar luxury property)
Meals Included: Breakfast, packed lunch, gourmet dinner with fine wine
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Your expert safari guide will navigate the park’s extensive network of roads, positioning you optimally for wildlife viewing and photography. Tarangire is famous for its huge elephant population and iconic baobab trees, forming the center of an annual migratory cycle that includes up to 3,000 elephants, 25,000 wildebeest, and 30,000 zebras. The park’s sparse vegetation and concentration of wildlife around the Tarangire River (especially during dry season) create exceptional viewing opportunities. Besides massive elephant herds, watch for lions lounging in trees, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, buffalo, and over 550 bird species including colorful bee-eaters and massive ostriches. The landscape is dotted with ancient baobab trees, some over 1,000 years old, creating dramatic photo opportunities. Enjoy a gourmet picnic lunch in a scenic location within the park. Late afternoon, exit Tarangire and transfer to your exclusive luxury tented camp or lodge for sundowners, dinner, and overnight.
What You’ll Experience: Your first African safari game drive, incredible elephant herds (often 100+ elephants), diverse wildlife in beautiful savannah landscape, stunning baobab trees perfect for photography, expert guiding with fascinating wildlife information, and luxury camping that redefines “roughing it.”

After breakfast, depart for the legendary Serengeti National Park via the scenic Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Stop at the Ngorongoro Crater viewpoint for spectacular photos overlooking the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera. Continue descending from the highlands into the heart of wild Africa. The journey offers beautiful high-lying farmland of Karatu before leaving the highlands to descend into the Serengeti. As you enter the Serengeti, the landscape transforms into endless golden plains stretching to every horizon, a sight that takes your breath away. Continue to the Central Serengeti area known as Seronera, one of the richest wildlife habitats in the park featuring the Seronera River which provides valuable water attracting diverse wildlife year-round. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to around 200,000 zebras and 300,000 Thomson’s gazelles joining wildebeest in their eternal migration. Begin game drives immediately, watching for the Big Five and other spectacular wildlife. Arrive at your luxury tented camp in late afternoon. After breakfast at camp, enjoy a final game drive as you head toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. After mid-morning, descend over 600 meters into the crater to view wildlife in this natural amphitheater spanning about 260 square kilometers. The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and stands as one of the most remarkable wildlife viewing areas on Earth. Supported by a year-round water supply and fodder, the crater supports vast herds of wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, eland, warthog, hippo, and giant African elephants. The crater’s dense predator population includes lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs, and the elusive leopard. There’s an excellent chance of spotting the critically endangered black rhino; the crater is one of the few places in Tanzania where rhino sightings are virtually guaranteed. Enjoy a gourmet picnic lunch at the scenic hippo pool surrounded by hundreds of hippos. After your crater tour, begin the ascent and drive back to Arusha (approximately 4 hours), arriving early evening. Physical Fitness & Requirements
Fitness Level Required: Moderate to good physical fitness. The 8-day Lemosho Route is more forgiving than shorter routes due to excellent acclimatization, but still requires determination and resilience. Safari portion requires no physical exertion.
Age Requirements: Minimum age 12 years (with excellent fitness and parental supervision), recommended 16+. Maximum age 70+ with doctor’s medical clearance letter.
Altitude Considerations: Summit Day reaches 5,895m where oxygen is approximately 50% of sea level. The extended 8-day itinerary significantly reduces altitude sickness risk and increases summit success to 90-95%.
Pre-Trip Training Recommendations (8-12 weeks):
- Cardiovascular training: Hiking with elevation gain, running, cycling, stair climbing (4-5 times per week, 45-60 minutes)
- Strength training: Focus on legs (squats, lunges), core stability, and shoulder strength for carrying daypack
- Practice hikes: Build to 6-8 hour hikes with 1,000m+ elevation gain while carrying 7-10kg daypack
- Mental preparation: Long trekking days and altitude require mental toughness
- Altitude training: If possible, spend time at elevation before your trip
Medical Clearance: Recommended for anyone over 60, with pre-existing conditions, or concerns about fitness level
Best Time to Travel
Optimal Months: January-March and June-October
January-March: Clear skies, excellent views, colder on summit, perfect wildlife viewing (calving season in Serengeti)
June-October: Drier weather, warmer summit temperatures, peak safari season (Great Migration in Serengeti)
Avoid: April-May (long rains), November (short rains)
