FAQs

7-Day Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route — Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ: GET ANSWERS

Yes — the hut accommodation, gentler slopes, and extra acclimatisation day at Horombo Hut make it one of the most beginner-friendly routes on Kilimanjaro.

The 6-day itinerary adds a crucial rest day at Horombo Hut (3,720 m), significantly improving acclimatisation and boosting summit success rates.

Around 70–80% on the 6-day itinerary — noticeably higher than the 5-day option due to the extra acclimatisation day.

Challenging — no technical climbing required, but expect long days, steep sections on summit night, and altitude above 5,800 m. Good fitness is essential.

Moderate to good — cardio training, hill walking, and strength work for 8–12 weeks beforehand is strongly recommended.

FAQ: GET ANSWERS

Wooden mountain huts with bunk beds at Mandara (2,720 m), Horombo (3,720 m), and Kibo (4,700 m) — the only Kilimanjaro route with hut sleeping throughout.

Around midnight from Kibo Hut, targeting Uhuru Peak at sunrise. Summit day is 12–15 hours of hiking in total.

Out-and-back — you ascend and descend the same trail, passing through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and arctic zones.

You do not need to be an elite athlete, but a solid baseline of cardiovascular fitness is essential. Ideally, begin a dedicated training program 3–6 months before your climb. Focus on: long-distance hiking (aim for 15–25 km days on hilly terrain), stair climbing or stairmaster sessions with a weighted pack, and aerobic endurance activities like running, cycling, or swimming. Practice hiking with your summit-day gear (boots, poles, daypack) to break in equipment and build confidence. Multi-day backpacking trips are the gold standard preparation. The 8-day format is more forgiving than a 6-day route, but summit night — a 10–12 hour round trip at extreme altitude — still demands real physical resilience.

Yes — altitude sickness is a risk on any Kilimanjaro route. Hiking slowly (pole pole), staying well hydrated, and the extra acclimatisation day all reduce the risk. Diamox may also be recommended by your doctor.

Yes — a green certificate for reaching Gillman’s Point (5,681 m) and a gold certificate for reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895 m).

January–March and June–October offer the most stable weather and clearest summit conditions.
