Machame Route Kilimanjaro: The Whiskey Route

The Machame Route is the most popular route on Kilimanjaro, and with good reason. It is scenic, well-acclimatized, and exciting. Known as the “Whiskey Route” (compared to the easier Marangu Route being called the “Coca-Cola Route”), Machame has a reputation as the adventurer’s choice: more challenging than the basic options but fully within reach of anyone who prepares properly.

More than 20,000 people climb the Machame Route every year. It offers some of the best views on the mountain, crosses the Shira Plateau, and includes the dramatic Barranco Wall. The 7-day itinerary builds in a crucial acclimatization day at Lava Tower, giving your body the time it needs to adjust.

If you want a route that combines excellent summit success rates with spectacular landscapes and a real sense of adventure, Machame is a strong choice. If you also want to avoid the crowds on Machame, the Lemosho Route is our top recommendation. But for the balance of experience and price, Machame is hard to beat.

Why Choose the Machame Route?

  • Outstanding scenery: Machame traverses all of Kilimanjaro’s ecological zones. The views from the Shira Plateau, the Lava Tower, and the Barranco Wall are among the best on the mountain.
  • Good acclimatization: The 7-day itinerary includes the Lava Tower acclimatization day—walk to 4,630m, sleep at 3,950m. This “climb high, sleep low” day is a major advantage over shorter or simpler routes.
  • Diverse terrain: Rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, the Shira Plateau, the Barranco Wall — Machame gives you the full Kilimanjaro experience.
  • Well-serviced route: Because of its popularity, the camps are well-maintained with good facilities.

The main downside of Machame is that its popularity can make it feel crowded during peak season (July–September). If you want the same terrain and scenery with fewer people, consider the Lemosho Route, which joins Machame at Shira 2 Camp and follows the same trail from there.

Machame Route — Difficulty Level

The Machame Route is rated moderate to challenging. It is harder than the Marangu Route but more manageable than the Umbwe. The terrain is more varied and the daily distances are longer than some other routes. Summit night on Machame is the same as on all routes, steep, cold, and exhausting.

Good physical preparation is essential. See our Kilimanjaro Training Guide for a full training plan. Altitude sickness can affect anyone, read our Kilimanjaro Altitude Sickness guide before you climb.

Machame Route — Best Time to Climb

The Machame Route can be climbed year-round, but the best seasons are the following:

  • January to March: Excellent weather, fewer crowds, and lower prices. A great time to do Machame with quieter trails and good visibility.
  • June to October: The main dry season. Clear skies, firm trails, and the best overall conditions, but this is peak season, so the route is at its busiest and prices are higher. Book well in advance.
  • Avoid April and May: The long rains. The Machame trail can become very muddy and slippery, visibility is poor, and some camps close. If you must climb during the rainy season, consider the Rongai Route instead—it is drier on the northern side.

Frequently Asked Questions —Machame Route

Yes, with good preparation. The 7-day Machame Route gives enough acclimatization time for most first-time climbers. You do not need previous altitude experience. The most important thing is physical fitness, specifically endurance and leg strength built through hiking practice over several months.

Both are excellent routes that share the same trail from Shira Camp to the summit. The key differences: Lemosho starts from further west so you spend more days in quieter, more remote terrain before the routes merge. Lemosho also has a slightly better acclimatization profile on the 8-day itinerary. If crowds are a concern, Lemosho is better. If you have 7 days and want a great route at a slightly lower cost, Machame is an excellent option.

A 6-day Machame option exists, but we do not recommend it. The 6-day itinerary removes the Karanga Camp night, meaning you go from Barranco directly to Barafu on day 5 — a long, demanding day. More importantly, you lose a night of acclimatization. The 7-day version gives your body significantly more time to adjust and produces much better summit success rates.

Approximately 20,000–25,000 climbers use the Machame Route each year, making it the busiest route on Kilimanjaro. During peak season (July to September), the camps can be quite full. If you prefer a quieter experience, consider the Lemosho Route or the Northern Circuit Route.

The cost of a Machame Route climb depends on how many days, the quality of accommodation, group size, and your operator. See our full Kilimanjaro Climb Cost guide for a detailed price breakdown, or contact us for a personalised quote.
