Rongai Route Kilimanjaro: The Complete Climbing Guide

The Rongai Route is the only route on Kilimanjaro that approaches from the north, near the Kenyan border. It is quiet, wild, and strikingly different from the popular southern routes. While Machame and Marangu carry tens of thousands of climbers every year, Rongai sees only a fraction of that traffic. If solitude on the mountain matters to you, Rongai is one of the best options.

The route is also one of the best choices if you are climbing during the rainy season. The northern slopes of Kilimanjaro receive significantly less rainfall than the southern side, so Rongai often stays drier when Machame and Lemosho are wet and muddy.

This guide covers everything you need to know about the Rongai Route, what it looks like day by day, how it compares to other routes, and who it suits best.

Why Choose the Rongai Route?

  • Real wilderness: The first three days on Rongai feel remote and wild. You pass through semi-arid moorland and open savannah, different in character from the dense rainforest of the southern routes. Wildlife sightings are more common here, including buffaloes and various antelope species.
  • Very quiet: Rongai sees a fraction of the traffic of Machame or Marangu. During the early days of the route, you may genuinely feel alone on the mountain.
  • Best rainy season option: The northern side of Kilimanjaro receives less rainfall than the south. During April, May, and November, when southern routes can be extremely muddy and wet, Rongai is often the most comfortable and accessible route.
  • Gentler gradient: Rongai has a less steep daily ascent than Machame or Lemosho. The terrain is more gradual, making it a good choice for those who are fit but not confident with steep, technical terrain.
  • Views of Mawenzi: Rongai Pass close to Mawenzi, Kilimanjaro’s second volcanic cone — a dramatic, jagged peak that few routes get close to. The views of Mawenzi from the upper sections of Rongai are exceptional.

Rongai Route Kilimanjaro: Important Note on the Summit Approach

One thing to be aware of before choosing Rongai: because the route approaches from the north, you summit via Gilman’s Point rather than Stella Point. Gilman’s Point is on the opposite side of the crater rim from Uhuru Peak. This means the walk along the rim from Gilman’s Point to Uhuru is approximately 1.5–2 hours, significantly longer than the 45-minute walk from Stella Point used by Machame and Lemosho climbers.

On an already exhausting summit night, this extra distance matters. It is not a reason to avoid Rongai, but it is worth being mentally prepared for. Make sure your training includes endurance for a very long summit night.

When to Climb the Rongai Route

The Rongai Route is the best option for rainy season climbing. The northern side of Kilimanjaro is significantly drier than the southern slopes during Tanzania’s long rains (April–May) and short rains (November).

  • Best months: January–March, June–October, and especially during the rainy season if you must climb in April, May, or November
  • Avoid: There is no month we would discourage completely for Rongai, but January and February offer excellent conditions with fewer crowds and good value

Frequently Asked Questions — Rongai Route

Yes. The Rongai Route has a gentler gradient than Machame or Lemosho and is one of the more forgiving routes in terms of daily terrain difficulty. The 7-day itinerary gives reasonable acclimatization time. It is a good option for first-time Kilimanjaro climbers who want a quieter experience and are climbing outside peak season.

Yes — and this is one of Rongai’s biggest advantages. The northern slopes are much drier than the south during the long rains (April–May) and the short rains (November). If you are constrained to climbing during these months, Rongai is the recommended route.

More so than other routes. The northern slopes are less disturbed by heavy foot traffic. Buffalo, eland, and various monkeys are sometimes seen on the lower sections. You are not guaranteed wildlife sightings, but the chance is higher here than on the busier southern routes.

Marangu is generally the least expensive Kilimanjaro route because you do not need camping equipment and the shorter itinerary means fewer days of guide and porter fees. See our full Kilimanjaro Climb Cost guide for a detailed breakdown.

Machame is more scenic, has a slightly better acclimatization profile (the Barranco Wall section adds variety and the approach to the summit is shorter from Stella Point), and a higher summit success rate. Rongai is quieter, better for the rainy season, and has a more gradual gradient. If crowds bother you and you want a wilderness feel, Rongai wins. If scenery and summit rates are your priorities, Machame or Lemosho are stronger choices.
