trip overview

A small group of women. Tanzania at its most wild. 4 nights in Zanzibar.

You'll spend seven days tracking wildlife across Tarangire, the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti — covering both the Central and North Serengeti during the Great Migration period — before four nights in Zanzibar to unwind on the coast. The group is kept to a maximum of twelve women, the vehicles are 4×4 Land Cruisers with open roof hatches, and every driver-guide on this safari is female — the only ones of their kind in Tanzania. Planned, led and run from Arusha by Exceptional Travel Expert, a licensed Tanzanian DMC — no overseas agency in the middle.

day-by-day itinerary

Where you go, what you do, and where you sleep each night.

Accommodation is confirmed at the time of booking. Where two properties are listed, both meet the same standard and the choice depends on availability for your dates.

Day1

Arrive in Arusha

Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)No driving

Welcome to Tanzania. We arrange up to two arrival transfers on Day 1 to collect guests from the airport and take you straight to your lodge in Arusha. If you land in daylight, look out the window — on a clear afternoon, Kilimanjaro is hard to miss, you can see it clearly.

Settle in, rest by the pool, or take a short walk into Arusha if you have the energy. In the evening, once the whole group has arrived, you'll sit down together for a welcome dinner. This is where you meet everyone — your fellow travellers, your female trip manager, and your guide, who will walk you through what to expect over the days ahead.

Overnight Mateves Boutique Lodge or Villa Maua En-suite rooms in Arusha. Meal: dinner.
Day2

Tarangire National Park

Approx. 2 hrs driveFull game drive

After breakfast, your female driver-guide picks you up and you head south-west to Tarangire. This park has more elephants than anywhere else in Tanzania — you'll often see herds of 50 to 100 gathered near the Tarangire River. Lions, leopards, giraffes and over 550 bird species share the park with them.

Tarangire has a look all of its own: open grassland scattered with huge, ancient baobab trees. You'll spend the day driving through it, stopping wherever animals appear, with a picnic lunch under the shade of an acacia. You end the day driving north towards the Ngorongoro area as the sun goes down.

Overnight Endoro Lodge Karatu / Ngorongoro Farm House or Similar En-suite rooms on the Ngorongoro crater rim approach. Meals: breakfast, picnic lunch, dinner.
Day3

Ngorongoro Crater

Full day inside the craterFull game drive

You head down into the Ngorongoro Crater early in the morning — a massive collapsed volcano, 600 metres deep and 260km² wide, with over 30,000 animals living inside it. It has the highest density of lions in Africa, permanent black rhino, large bull elephants, and flamingos gathering at the soda lake on the crater floor.

The animals here have grown up around safari vehicles, so they don't run. Lions often sleep right on the track. You'll eat a picnic lunch down on the crater floor, then drive back up to the rim and return to the lodge for a second night.

Overnight Endoro Lodge Karatu / Ngorongoro Farm House or Similar Second night. Meals: breakfast, picnic lunch, dinner.
Day4

Central Serengeti National Park

Approx. 3–4 hrs drive with game stopsAfternoon game drive

Today you drive into the Serengeti — one of the biggest wildlife areas on earth. The drive over is not just a transfer; you stop whenever animals appear along the way. Then the plains open out and you get your first real feel for the Serengeti: huge sky, golden grass stretching in every direction, and a lion lying in the road without any interest in moving.

An afternoon game drive follows, ending with sundowner drinks out in the bush as the light fades. Most guests tell us this is the evening they remember most.

Overnight Moyo Luxury Tented Camp or Kubu Kubu Tented Camp En-suite tents, Central Serengeti. Meals: breakfast, picnic lunch, dinner.
Days5–6

Central Serengeti to North Serengeti

Following the herdsTwo full days of game drives

Two full days tracking the Great Migration as it moves north. During this season you could find yourself among hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra, with the possibility of a river crossing at the Mara. The Central Serengeti also has large resident lion prides and cheetah year-round, and your guide keeps in close contact with the wider ranger network to know where the action is.

No rushing — full mornings and afternoons in the vehicle, picnic lunches out in the open, and a slow drive north towards the river systems where the herds gather in the evening.

Final Serengeti Morning, then Fly to Zanzibar

Zanzibar Beach Days

Free days at leisureNo driving

Two full days with nothing on the schedule. White sand, warm water, and nowhere to be. Swim, read, take a kayak out, or try some snorkelling over the reef. After seven days of early mornings and long drives, the pace here is a welcome change — you can be as active or as quiet as you like.

Overnight Nungwi Dreams or Zanzibar Serena Hotel, or similar Continued stay. Meals: breakfast, dinner.
Days10–11

Stone Town

UNESCO World Heritage siteGuided exploration + free time

Stone Town is a tightly packed old town built from coral stone, full of narrow alleyways, carved wooden doors and covered markets. You'll walk through the old Arab Fort, the former Slave Market and the Darajani spice market, where cloves, cinnamon and cardamom have been traded for centuries. A spice farm tour into the interior is available as an optional add-on if you want to walk through the plantations and taste as you go.

Once the guided walk is done, the rest of the time is yours — wander at your own pace, browse the shops, or sit by the seafront and watch the wooden dhows come in.

frequently asked questions

Questions we get asked most often.

This is the trip of a lifetime for many of our guests, and we want you to feel fully informed before you book.

What are the arrival and departure details?

The trip starts in Arusha and ends in Zanzibar. Arrival airport is Kilimanjaro International (JRO); departure airport is Abeid Amani Karume International (ZNZ) in Zanzibar. We recommend arriving a day before your trip start, landing no later than 1pm, so you have time to rest and aren't caught out by flight delays. You're free to depart any time on Day 11.

Can I have my own room?

Pricing is based on two guests sharing a twin room. If you're traveling solo, we'll pair you with another woman on the trip. There's no mandatory single supplement, but if you'd prefer your own room, that's available on request — just ask us for the current rate when you book.

Can I bring my partner or a friend?

This is a female-only departure, designed for women traveling on their own. A female friend is very welcome to join you, but we're not able to book male travelers onto this trip.

Can my daughter join me?

Yes — if she's 16 or older, we'd be glad to welcome her on the trip alongside you.

Will my guides be female?

Yes. The whole safari portion of this trip is led by local female drivers and guides — the only ones of their kind operating in Tanzania — alongside a female trip manager who travels with the group throughout.

What medication or vaccinations do I need for Tanzania?

Speak with your doctor or a travel clinic before departure about anti-malarials, yellow fever vaccination and any other recommended inoculations. Read our full Tanzania vaccinations guide for a detailed overview of what to prepare.

What should I pack for a safari?

Once your booking is confirmed, we'll send a full packing list. As a general rule, dress to blend in: stick to earthy tones like khaki and olive, and avoid bright reds, blues and white. Black is also worth avoiding as it tends to attract mosquitoes.

What happens if I get sick on the trip?

Comprehensive travel and medical insurance, including international evacuation cover, is required for everyone on this trip. Should you fall ill, we'll arrange transport to the nearest appropriate medical facility and stay with you for as long as you need.

Do I need a visa for Tanzania?

Yes, all travelers need a visa, which can be applied for online via immigration.go.tz. We strongly recommend applying at least 3 weeks ahead of travel. See our Tanzania visa guide for step-by-step instructions.

How does the payment plan work?

A 30% deposit secures your spot, with the remaining balance due 60 days before departure. You're welcome to make additional payments at any point in between. If we cancel a trip before the balance is due, your deposit is refunded in full, minus any bank charges.

Can I pay by credit card?

Bank transfer is our preferred method, as it carries the lowest fees. Credit card payment is also available, with a small additional processing fee.

Will there be WiFi at the camps and lodges?

Most properties on this route offer WiFi in the main common areas, though signal in the bush can be unreliable. Many guests find this one of the better parts of the trip — a genuine chance to disconnect for a few days.

Can you cater to dietary requirements?

Vegetarian options are available at every meal. Vegan guests should expect some repetition given the remote nature of many properties, and we're unable to accommodate certain food allergies. Please tell us about any dietary needs before making any payment, as your deposit is non-refundable.

What's your refund policy?

Payments toward this trip are non-refundable, except where we don't reach the minimum number of guests required to run the departure. We strongly recommend taking out travel insurance as soon as you confirm your spot — don't wait until closer to departure to arrange it.
