10-Day Women Only Kilimanjaro Climb — Lemosho Route + Safari Extension
trip overview
All-Female Kilimanjaro Climb
Take on the Roof of Africa alongside a team of strong, capable women. This 10-day trek follows the Lemosho route, climbing from Kilimanjaro's quieter western flank to Uhuru Peak at 5,895m, supported every step of the way by a fully female crew of guides, assistant guides and cooks, with at least half of our porter team also women — as many as we can employ and find available for your dates. Want to keep going once you're off the mountain? A 6-day safari extension into Tarangire, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti can be added on, taking you straight from camp life into the wild plains of northern Tanzania.
The Lemosho Route
We'll follow the Lemosho route — one of the most beautiful ways up Kilimanjaro. Starting on the quieter western side of the mountain, it gives us extra time to ease into the altitude, settle into the rhythm of the trek, and take in the landscape as it slowly unfolds around us. The itinerary below is built around supporting your acclimatisation and giving you the best possible chance of standing on the summit, without rushing past the scenery to get there.
day-by-day itinerary — the climb
10 days, 9 nights, one mountain.
Camps and timings below follow the standard Lemosho schedule and may shift slightly depending on weather, group pace and ranger guidance on the day.
Arrival Day in Tanzania
Welcome to Tanzania. We run two group airport pickups timed around the Qatar Airways arrival on Day 1, taking you straight to The Maridadi Hotel in Moshi at the foot of the mountain. If your flight lands outside those windows, additional pickups can be arranged at $100 USD each way.
The rest of the day is yours to rest, unpack and settle in. In the late afternoon we'll run a full briefing with your guide team — what to expect on the mountain, a kit check, and a chance to meet the other women you'll be climbing alongside.
Moshi to Mti Mkubwa Camp
After breakfast, we drive from Moshi to the Lemosho trailhead on Kilimanjaro's western side (2,300m), where the full crew — guides, cooks and porters — meets us to register at the gate. From here, the trek begins through dense montane rainforest, home to colobus and blue monkeys if you're lucky.
It's a gentle first day, designed to ease everyone into camp life. We arrive at Mti Mkubwa ("Big Tree") Camp in the early afternoon, with plenty of time to settle into your tent before dinner.
Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp
The forest thins out as we climb, giving way to heath and moorland. The trees get shorter, the views get bigger, and the giant heather and lobelia start to appear — your first real sense of how different this landscape becomes the higher you go.
We emerge onto the edge of the Shira Plateau by the early afternoon, with views back across the rainforest we came up through and, on a clear day, your first proper look at Kibo's summit ahead.
Shira Camp 1 to Shira Camp 2
Today is a shorter, gentler walk across the wide, open Shira Plateau — a good day for "walk high, sleep low" acclimatisation, with side trails your guides may use to gain extra altitude during the day before dropping back down to camp.
The landscape here feels almost lunar: rolling moorland, volcanic rock, and Kibo's summit dominating the skyline ahead of you for most of the walk.
Shira Camp 2 to Barranco Camp
One of the most important acclimatisation days on the route. We climb up to the Lava Tower (4,600m) for lunch — a dramatic volcanic rock formation — before descending into the lush Barranco Valley, dropping over 600m in altitude in the process.
The valley floor is scattered with giant senecio and lobelia plants found almost nowhere else on earth, and the camp sits right beneath the imposing Barranco Wall, which we'll be climbing first thing tomorrow.
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
The day opens with the famous Barranco Wall — a steep scramble that looks more intimidating than it is. It's non-technical, but exposed in places, and your guides will be right there with you the whole way up. The view from the top, looking back over the valley, is one of the best on the mountain.
From there, the trail rolls across a series of ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp — a shorter day overall, which helps keep your body adjusting gradually before the push toward Barafu.
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
A shorter, steady climb up to Barafu — your base camp for the summit attempt. The terrain turns rocky and sparse, and the air noticeably thinner. We arrive with enough daylight left to rest, sort summit kit, and get a thorough briefing from your guides on what tonight and tomorrow will involve.
Dinner is early, and so is bedtime — you'll be woken well before midnight to begin the push for the summit.
Summit Day: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak, then Mweka Camp
This is the day. We leave Barafu around midnight, climbing slowly by headtorch up loose scree switchbacks toward Stella Point on the crater rim, then on to Uhuru Peak — the highest point on the African continent, at 5,895m — usually arriving as the sun comes up over the clouds below.
After time at the summit to take it all in, we descend back to Barafu for a short rest, then continue down through changing terrain to Mweka Camp, back in the forest zone, for a well-earned night's sleep at a far friendlier altitude.
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate, then back to Moshi
A final descent through cool, damp forest down to Mweka Gate, where you'll receive your summit certificate and say thank you (and probably a tip) to the crew who got you up and down safely. From here, it's a drive back to The Maridadi Hotel in Moshi.
A hot shower, a real bed, and a celebration dinner — you've earned all three.
Departure Day
A relaxed final morning to rest, pack, and let it all sink in, before your transfer to the airport for your departure flight. If you've added the safari extension, this is the morning you'll instead head onward to Tarangire to start the next chapter.
optional add-on — days 11–16
The Safari Extension
A 6-day, 5-night add-on that takes you straight from the mountain into the wild plains of northern Tanzania: Tarangire, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti. This extension can only be booked together with the Kilimanjaro climb — it isn't available as a standalone trip.
Tarangire National Park
After the mountain, Tarangire feels like a different world entirely. We drive south to the park, known for its enormous elephant herds, ancient baobab trees and open grassland, spending the day on a full game drive with a picnic lunch out in the bush.
Ngorongoro Crater
Down into the Ngorongoro Crater for a full day among its 30,000-plus resident animals — the highest density of lions in Africa, permanent black rhino, large bull elephants and flamingos gathered at the soda lake on the crater floor. A picnic lunch down on the crater floor, then back up to the lodge for a second night in the area.
Serengeti National Park
Two full days exploring one of the largest wildlife areas on earth: endless golden plains, big cat sightings, and — season permitting — the chance to catch the Great Migration moving through. Sundowner drinks out in the bush make for a memorable end to each day.
Return to Arusha
One last morning game drive before heading back toward Arusha, with stops along the way as wildlife allows. A free evening to relax, pack, and reflect on everything the last two weeks have covered — from summit to safari.
Departure Day
A final breakfast, then transfer to the airport for your departure flight home. Sixteen days, one summit, three national parks, and a group of women who climbed the highest mountain in Africa together.

frequently asked questions
Questions we get asked most often.
This is a serious physical undertaking for many of our guests, and we want you to feel fully informed and prepared before you book.
The trip starts and ends at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), close to Moshi. We run two group pickups timed to meet the Qatar Airways flight arriving on Day 1; additional pickups outside that window can be arranged for $100 USD each way. You're free to depart any time on Day 10 (or Day 16, if you've added the safari extension).
This is a high-activity trip: multiple consecutive days of trekking, several hours a day, plus one long summit night. No technical climbing skill is required, but a solid base of cardio fitness and some experience hiking with a daypack will make a real difference to how much you enjoy it. We recommend several months of training beforehand — hiking, stairs, and time on your feet — and we're happy to share guidance once you've booked.
Yes. Your guides, assistant guides and cooks on the mountain are all women, English-speaking and Wilderness First Responder trained, and at least half of the porter team is also female — as many as we can employ and find available for your dates.
It's a local NGO, set up by our lead guide, that helps women in Tanzania access the training, mentorship and funding needed to become officially certified mountain and safari guides. A portion of every booking on this trip goes toward that work.
Pricing is based on sharing. If you're traveling solo, we'll pair you with another woman on the trip, with no mandatory single supplement. If you'd rather have your own room or tent throughout, that's available on request — just ask us for the current rate when you book.
This is a female-only departure, designed for women climbing and travelling together. A female friend is very welcome to join you, but we're not able to book male travelers onto this trip.
Your guides are Wilderness First Responder trained and check oxygen saturation with a pulse oximeter at regular intervals throughout the climb. We carry a full first aid kit and emergency oxygen, and a temporary local emergency evacuation cover is included for rescue on the mountain or on safari. Comprehensive travel and medical insurance, including international evacuation cover, is still required from everyone joining the trip.
Once your booking is confirmed, we'll send a full kit list. In general, you're dressing for everything from rainforest heat to summit-night cold, so layering is key: a warm, low-temperature-rated sleeping bag, a good pair of broken-in boots, and proper insulated outer layers for the summit push. Gear rental can be arranged if you don't want to buy everything yourself.
Yes, all travelers need a visa, which can be applied for online via immigration.go.tz. We strongly recommend applying at least 3 weeks ahead of travel. See our Tanzania visa guide for step-by-step instructions.
Speak with your doctor or a travel clinic before departure about anti-malarials, yellow fever vaccination, altitude medication such as Diamox if appropriate, and any other recommended inoculations. Read our full Tanzania vaccinations guide for a detailed overview of what to prepare.
WiFi is available in your Land Cruiser and at the hotels in Moshi and Arusha, but there's no signal once you're up on the mountain itself. Most guests find this one of the better parts of the trip — a genuine, uninterrupted few days away from everything.
No. The safari extension is only available as an add-on to this Kilimanjaro climb departure and can't be booked as a standalone trip.
A 30% deposit secures your spot, with the remaining 70% balance due 60 days before departure. You're welcome to make additional payments at any point in between. By booking, you agree to our Terms & Conditions.
Vegetarian options are available at every meal, including on the mountain. Vegan guests should expect some repetition given how remote the camps are, and we're unable to accommodate certain food allergies. Please tell us about any dietary needs before making any payment, as your deposit is non-refundable.
Payments toward this trip are non-refundable, except where we don't reach the minimum number of guests required to run the departure. We strongly recommend taking out travel insurance as soon as you confirm your spot — don't wait until closer to departure to arrange it.
