Marangu Route Kilimanjaro: The Coca-Cola Route
The only Kilimanjaro route with the hut accommodation instead of tents (camping)

Marangu Route Kilimanjaro: The Complete Climbing Guide
The Marangu Route is the oldest and most established route on Kilimanjaro. It is sometimes called the “Coca-Cola Route,” a nickname that, fairly or unfairly, has given it a reputation as the easy option. The truth is a little more complicated. Marangu is the only route on Kilimanjaro that uses dormitory-style hut accommodation instead of tents. It is also the only route that goes the same way up and down.
The Marangu Route’s main appeal is its lower cost and greater physical comfort on the mountain, you sleep in a bed, not a sleeping bag on the ground. But it has a lower summit success rate than longer routes, mainly because the standard 6-day itinerary does not give your body as much time to adjust to altitude.
This guide tells you the truth about the Marangu Route, what it is like, who it suits, and what to expect.

What Makes the Marangu Route Different?
Two things set the Marangu Route apart from every other route on Kilimanjaro:
1. Hut accommodation.
Every other route on Kilimanjaro uses tents. The Marangu Route uses three mountain huts, Mandara Huts, Horombo Huts, and Kibo Huts. Each hut has bunk beds with mattresses and basic blankets. There is no need to carry sleeping bags (though most people still bring a liner), no need for tents, and no sleeping on the cold ground. For climbers who are uncomfortable with camping or simply prefer more physical comfort overnight, this is a significant advantage.
2. Same path up and down.
All other Kilimanjaro routes ascend and descend via different trails. Marangu goes up and comes back the same way. This means you will see the same landscape twice, and you will pass other climbers going in the opposite direction. Some people find this monotonous; others prefer the familiar path on the way down.

Marangu Route: Expert Guide & Assessment
We want to be honest with you about the Marangu Route, because too many operators sell it as the “easy route” without being clear about the trade-offs.
- The summit success rate is lower. The 6-day Marangu itinerary has a summit success rate of roughly 50–65%. Compare this to the 8-Day Lemosho at 85–95%. The main reason is the absence of a proper “climb high, sleep low” acclimatisation day. There is no Lava Tower equivalent on this route.
- The crater rim approach is longer on summit night. Marangu climbers reach the crater rim at Gilman’s Point (5,681m), not Stella Point. The walk from Gilman’s Point to Uhuru Peak is longer than from Stella Point — roughly 1.5 to 2 hours along the rim, compared to 45 minutes. On an already exhausting summit night, this extra distance turns many people back.
- The huts are a genuine advantage for some climbers. Sleeping in a bed at altitude is more comfortable than camping. For older climbers, those with joint problems, or anyone who strongly dislikes camping, this is a real benefit.
- It is less scenic than the western routes. Marangu is beautiful, but it does not cross the Shira Plateau or include the Barranco Wall. The southern approach has fewer dramatic landscape changes than Lemosho or Machame.
Our recommendation: if your priority is reaching the summit, choose the Lemosho Route or Machame Route. If cost or hut accommodation is your primary concern, the 6-day Marangu is a reasonable choice, just go in with realistic expectations and be very well prepared physically.
Marangu Route — Best Time to Climb
The Marangu Route can be climbed year-round, but the best seasons are the following:
- January to March: Excellent weather, fewer crowds, and lower prices. It’s a great time to do Marangu with quieter trails and good visibility.
- June to October: The main dry season. Clear skies, firm trails, and the best overall conditions—but this is peak season, so the route is at its busiest and prices are higher. Book well in advance.
- Avoid April and May: The long rains. The Marangu trail can become very muddy and slippery, visibility is poor, and the huts get very quiet as many operators avoid this period. If you must climb during the rainy season, consider the Rongai Route instead — it is significantly drier on the northern side.

| Machame (7-day) | 6–7 | 80–85% | High | Popular scenic route |
| Rongai (7-day) | 6–7 | 75–80% | Low | Northern approach, quiet |
| Marangu (6-day) This route | 5–6 | ~60% | High | Budget, hut accommodation |
Frequently Asked Questions — Marangu Route
It is often described that way, but the label is misleading. The summit of Kilimanjaro is 5,895 metres above sea level. There is no easy way to get there. The Marangu is more straightforward in terms of terrain and more comfortable in terms of accommodation, but its lower summit success rate suggests it is actually harder to summit on Marangu than on longer routes, mainly because of the shorter acclimatization time.
The huts provide mattresses and basic blankets. However, most climbers still bring a sleeping bag liner or a lightweight bag, especially for the colder nights at Horombo and Kibo. A good sleeping bag is always worth having at altitude, temperatures at Kibo Huts can drop well below zero.
Technically yes, but we do not recommend it. The 5-day itinerary skips the acclimatisation day at Horombo, which already gives Marangu a shorter acclimatisation profile than other routes. The 5-day success rate is significantly lower than the 6-day. Always choose the 6-day option.
Marangu is generally the least expensive Kilimanjaro route because you do not need camping equipment and the shorter itinerary means fewer days of guide and porter fees. See our full Kilimanjaro Climb Cost guide for a detailed breakdown.
