There are several routes up Kilimanjaro. Each has its own character. The Lemosho stands out for three reasons:
- Excellent acclimatization: The 8-day itinerary builds altitude very gradually. The Lava Tower acclimatization day, where you walk up to 4,630m and sleep at 3,950m — is one of the most effective acclimatization steps of any route on the mountain.
- Outstanding scenery: Lemosho traverses all five of Kilimanjaro’s ecological zones — rainforest, heath and moorland, alpine desert, Shira Plateau, and the summit arctic zone. The Shira Plateau, in particular, is one of the most beautiful stretches of any Kilimanjaro route.

Lemosho Route — Difficulty Level
The Lemosho Route is rated moderate. It is not a beginner’s walk, but it is absolutely within reach of anyone who prepares properly. The terrain includes long days of uphill hiking, the Barranco Wall scramble, and the demanding summit night on steep scree.

Lemosho Route — Best Time to Climb
The Lemosho Route can be climbed year-round, but the best seasons are:
- January to March: Excellent weather, fewer crowds, lower prices. One of the best times to do Lemosho.
- June to October: The main dry season. Clear skies, good visibility, but busier and more expensive. Book well in advance.
- Avoid April and May: The long rains. Trails can be muddy, visibility is poor, and some lodges close.

It looks scarier than it is. The Barranco Wall is a hands-and-feet scramble up a steep rocky face. You do not need ropes or any special equipment you just use your hands for balance and grip in a few places. Most climbers find it exciting and fun. It takes about 45 minutes to an hour to climb. There are no exposure points that would concern someone with a reasonable head for heights.
On the 8-day Lemosho itinerary with a professional operator, summit success rates typically range from 85% to 95%. This is among the highest of any Kilimanjaro route. The extended acclimatization profile is the main reason. The 7-day itinerary has slightly lower rates, we recommend the 8-day for the best chance of reaching Uhuru Peak.
We strongly recommend the 8-day. The extra day is spent on the crucial Lava Tower acclimatization walk, which makes a measurable difference to how well your body adjusts. The 7-day is also a good option and significantly better than most other routes, but if your budget and schedule allow, go for 8 days.
